Don’t let the enemy win!!! Anxiety has its place, and scientists have learned that some degree of stress or anxiety isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are actually benefits that anxiety brings such as:

  • it helps you feel more motivated and prepared when faced with challenges
  • it acts as a warning system to protect us from danger and allow us to react faster to emergencies (e.g. fight-or-flight response)
  • it brings awareness to your current situation to encourage necessary changes in your life
  • it increases your concern for others (apathy)

But there is certainly a dark side to anxiety – a side that stifles confidence. Anxiety causes children to feel limited, to doubt themselves, and their capabilities. This feeling of limitation lowers their self-confidence, which only adds to more feelings of anxiety, and it becomes a vicious cycle that changes their thinking pathways.

Here are some great ways to keep your child on the confidence track:

  1. Remind your child not to compare themselves to others. This is a dangerous cycle and can lead to more anxiety and depression. Instead, encourage them to be inspired by others and continue to operating in their own strengths.
  2. Help your child become aware of the physical symptoms of anxiety so that they can intervene with positive replacement thoughts, instead.
Teach them that when they begin to feel anxiety creep in, label the feeling and replace the thought with one that encourages them to be brave and courageous, instead.
  3. Encourage your child to try new things and take on interesting challenges. This will give them an opportunity to engage in experiences that stretch them and develop their confidence.

Sometimes, helping our children overcome fears can be difficult on our own, but with the guidance of a professional, it is possible to get them the help they need.
